CITY OF BANGOR
(TITLE.) Resolve, Stating the Intent of the Cnmncil to Anply any Additional State General
Purpose Aid for Education to Property Tax Relief.

RESOLWD
Whereas, under the part one budget adopted by the State Legislature, the City of Bangor will
receive approximately $185,000 less in General purpose Aid to Education for Fiscal
Year2000; and
Whereas, the State Legislature and the Governor are currently debating increasing this level of
State Aid; and
Whereas, over the last ten years, the failure of the State to pmAde adequate aid to education
has resulted in an increase in the buden of property taxes for education funding;
and
Whereas, since 1990, the actual dollar amount of school aid received by the City of Bangor has
declined by more than $900,000; and
Whereas, additional State Aid Is essential to reduce the property tax burden for education and
to Insure that we continue to provide quality schools for our children; and
Whereas, the Sdwol Committee has adopted and submitted Its proposed budget for the
coming year, a budget which will result in an Increase in that portion of the property
tax devoted to school support unless additional State Aid is provided; and
Whereas, some State policy makers have indicated a concern that additional State funding for
education may not be used fon property tax relief.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT
It Is our intent to directly apply any additional General purpose Aid to Education to reduce the
property tax commitment and mill rate of the residents and property owners of the City of
Bangor.
