Item No. 17-239
Date: June 26, 2017
Item/Subject: ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Penobscot Theatre Company to
Support the Dramatic Academy Summer Session 2
Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development
Commentary: The City of Bangor's Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously voted to
grant $2,000 to the Penobscot Theatre Company to help fund its Dramatic Academy Summer Session 2.
PTC's signature summer session is for students aged 4-20, will take place July 31 -August 20, and will
revolve around the dramatization of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes To allow for
planned renovations of the Bangor Opera House during this period, this session must be relocated to
Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School.
Designed and led by professional teaching artists, the program includes classes in voice, movement, stage
combat, improvisation, set design and construction, stage management, prop design and construction,
costuming, lighting, sound, and much more. Each year, the theatre's summer youth program fills an
important niche for local families seeking constructive, educational activities for their children while school
is out of session. The theatre expects to enroll at least 35 students for the summer session, and attract an
audience of 200-320 for each performance.
This item was reviewed and recommended for approved by the Business & Economic Development
Committee at its June 20, 2017 meeting.
