HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-26 17-238 ORDERCOUNCIL ACTION Item No. 17-238 Date: June 26, 2017 Item/Subject: ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Bangor Historical Society to Support Drums on the Penobscot.- A Civil War Experience Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development Commentary: The City of Bangor's Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously voted to grant $2,000 to the Bangor Historical Society to help fund Drums on the Penobscot., A Civil War Experience. This weekend -long interactive event will be held from July 28 to July 30 on the University of Maine Augusta's Bangor campus. This Civil War reenactment will include presentations, interactive visitor drills, children's activities, a mock trial of a deserter, and speakers and workshops with nationally known Civil War historians. This immersive experience offers visitors a more meaningful connection with Civil War history by seeing it through the lens of everyday experience of the people who lived it. In addition to increasing interest in Bangor as a summer destination by attracting Civil War enthusiasts from other states, the CCD sees this as yet another opportunity to expand its support of diverse and wide-ranging cultural events in the city. This item was reviewed and recommended for approved by the Business & Economic Development Committee at its June 20, 2017 meeting. ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Bangor Historical Society to Support Drums on the Penobscot; A Civil War Experience WHEREAS, the City Council has made an appropriation of funds to support arts and cultural organizations; has established a Commission on Cultural Development; and has assigned the Commmission the responsbility of reviewing grant applications from arts and cultural organizations, and to make recommendations for grant funding to the City Council; and WHEREAS, the Bangor Historical Society has submitted an application for funds to support Dnvms on the Penobscot: A Civil War E perxwe, a weekend -long event that will be held 3uly 28-30, 2017 on the University of Maine Augusta's Bangor campus, and will offer an immersive experience and meaningful connection with the Civil War via presentations, interactive vistor drills, children's activities, workshops, and more; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development recommends the approval of the rest due to the merits of the project and the benefits to the community; and WIHEREA% the grant application was complete, well organized and met funding criteria; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development and the Business & Economic Development Committee voted to recommend to the City Council approval of a grant in the amount of $2,000: BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT A Grant of $2,000 is hereby authorized to the Bangor Historical Society to support Drwm on the Pen2obscvt• A Cull War Eperierrce.
