Date: June 26, 2017
Item/Subject: ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Bangor Historical Society to
Support Drums on the Penobscot.- A Civil War Experience
Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development
Commentary: The City of Bangor's Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously voted to
grant $2,000 to the Bangor Historical Society to help fund Drums on the Penobscot., A Civil War
Experience. This weekend -long interactive event will be held from July 28 to July 30 on the University of
Maine Augusta's Bangor campus. This Civil War reenactment will include presentations, interactive visitor
drills, children's activities, a mock trial of a deserter, and speakers and workshops with nationally known
Civil War historians. This immersive experience offers visitors a more meaningful connection with Civil War
history by seeing it through the lens of everyday experience of the people who lived it. In addition to
increasing interest in Bangor as a summer destination by attracting Civil War enthusiasts from other
states, the CCD sees this as yet another opportunity to expand its support of diverse and wide-ranging
cultural events in the city.
This item was reviewed and recommended for approved by the Business & Economic Development
