HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-05-22 17-189 RESOLVECOUNCIL ACTION Item No. 17-189 Date: May 22, 2017 Item/Subject: RESOLVE, Supporting a Local Walkability Forum Responsible Department: Community Connector Commentary: GrowSmart Maine, in partnership with local stakeholders, proposes to organize a Walkability Forum in downtown Bangor in mid-September of 2017. The goal is to showcase existing models for walkability, share experiences, connect attendees with resources, and stimulate further efforts toward making Maine downtowns healthier, greener, and more economically viable. At this time the following partners have been confirmed: Livable Communities, Eastern Maine Development Corporation, Downtown Bangor Partnership, the Bangor Y, Transportation for All, Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Alpha One, the Maine Discovery Museum, and the Bangor Climate Action Team. The Infrastructure Committee recommended this item for approval on April 25, 2017. Resolve, Supporting a Walkability Forum in September 2017 WHEREAS, Walkability is a measure of how friendly a community is to walking, biking and public transit. WHEREAS, Municipalities with higher "walk scores" experience significant health, Environmental, and economic benefits. WHEREAS, Maine has experienced both an increase in the number of people interested in living in downtowns (aka walkable communities) and an increase in pedestrian and bicycle fatalities in the last two years. Resolved By the City Council of the City of Bangor: That the City of Bangor supports a walkability forum that is endorsed by Grow Smart Maine which will include a one-half day of panels & workshops. The Forum will include participation from statewide groups and agencies associated with accessibility, alternative transportation, and downtown revitalization.
