Item No. 17-145
Date: April 24, 2017
Item/Subject: ORDINANCE, Amending Chapter 116, Fire Prevention, of the Code of the
City of Bangor, By Adopting Standards for Cooking Equipment Used in Fixed,
Mobile, and Temporary Concessions
Responsible Department: Fire Prevention
Commentary:
This Ordinance would adopt fire safety standards for cooking equipment used by food trucks
and other outdoor vendors.
Under present state and local regulations, the fire safety of food trucks and similar vendors is
largely unregulated. Ensuring the safety of cooking equipment used by these vendors is
important for the safety of employees and their customers.
The proposed regulations are based on the 2015 version of the NFPA 1, the fire code that the
State is intending to adopt soon. Those regulations are modified in the attached ordinance so
that tents are not required to have full fire suppression systems; this change is allowed by NFPA
1. The rest of the proposed ordinance codifies what the City has typically asked of these types
of concessions.
This item was discussed at the Government Operations Committee meeting on April 19, 2017.
