QITLE.) Resolve. Stalro the Opposition of the City of Banoor to he Creation of a Ma ne Woods
National Park
WHEREAS, RESTORE: The North Woods has proposed establishing a 3.2 million acre National
Park in Northern Maine; and
WHEREAS, the creation of such a park would effectively eliminate a major part of the forest
industry in the State, cause a significant dislocation to this area's ecoiromy, and
damage the livelihood of thousands of individuals currently employed in the forest
products industry; and
WHEREAS, Maine has long enjoyed a pmductive and cooperative relationship with its forestry
landowners through which private property has been made available for
appropriate public uses such as camping, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and
other outdoor recreational activities enjoyed by the people of Maine; and
WHEREAS, the State of Maine has also taken the necessary steps to protect areas of unique
natural importance and to insure that such areas remain open to the public within
the State's overall context of public and private partnership and access; and
WHEREAS, the residents of the areas of the State which will be most directly impacted by this
proposal dearly do not support the concept of a national park;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CIT' COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR,
THAT:
We hereby oppose the creation of a Maine Woods National Park and call upon the Governor of
Maine, our Congressional Delegation, and other public officials to formally appose this
proposal. We support the long-standing tradition of the State through which public and private
interests have worked cooperatively to Insure protection of our key natural areas and to
maintain appropriate public access and use of private property. These relationships must be
maintained and strengthened to insure continued access and protection and as a national
model of public and private cooperation.
