FR: Frank Comeau, Director, Parks&Recreation
RE: Hayfords Park Playground Replacement Recommendation
DA: June 2'/, 2000
After a great deal of research, we are recommending the selection of
M. E. O'Brian's Landscape Structure Option I to replace the Creative Playground
at Hayfords Park. This decision is based on a thorough review of each vendor's
proposals as well as site inspections and reference checks. M. E. O'Brien provides
the most thorough proposal, which include three options to choose from. A
representative from M. E. O'Brien also contacted us on several occasions.
Mataruno Recreation, which represents Gametime, offered an attractive proposal
with a variety of interesting components. However, it appeared the specifications
were somewhat generic and not to our specifications in all cases. Pettenilli
Associates, who represents Miracle Recreation, offered a limited proposal with
expanded decking, punched steel decking was specified. -
Another factor in our decision is our past experience with M. E. O'Brien and
their equipment, service and reliability. In the past nine years, the city has replaced
ten playgrounds in public parks and the School Department has installed new
playgrounds at Vine St., Fairmount, Abraham Lincoln and Fourteenth SL Schools.
These playgrounds are all manufactured by Landscape Structures, Inc. and have
served us extremely well.
It is our opinion, based on our experience and research, that Landscape
Structures produces a superior product that will last for many years with little or no
maintenance.
00-x80
A very important part of the life of any playground equipment is its proper
installation, particularly here in the northeast. Each post or rail is precisely cut and
must be properly attached in a precise manner. Just one component out of line can
create problems with the entire structure. We therefore recommend that M. E.
O'Brien be retained to install the equipment for the cost of $9,670. f should also
note that if the city decided to install the equipment by volunteers (which may be
very difficult to retain at this late stage); it will increase our cost for prep work
material and labor by approximately $4,000 to $5,000.
The attached pages contain information which assisted us in arriving at this
decision. We are confident that Landscape Structures will provide the city with the
best quality product.
