Item No. 00-233
Date: Tine 12, 2000
Item/subject: Ordinance, Amending Chapter 58 of the Code of the City of Bangor- False Fire
Alarms, Alarm Response Fees.
Responsible Department:
Commentary:
The Fire Department has requested that Me Council consider amending Chapter 58, Alarm
Systems, 4 58-10 to create a fee schedule for false fire alarms, similar to the schedule utilized
by the Police Department in 4 58-6 for false police alarms.
The proposed amendment charges the owner of a premise protectetl by a false alarm nothing
for the first three false alarms in One calendar year, $250 each for four to eight false alarms,
and $1000 for each additional false alamr. The Fire Department estimates Mat it costs $5] to
respond to a single false alarm.
The fee schedule for Me Police. Department Is $25 and $100. Fre recommends the higher fee
structure based on the much larger nature of fire call responses. The intent of this Ordinance is
to provide an incentive for property owners to work to reduce preventable alarms and to
recover a portion of the ❑tys costs associated wiM hlse alarm responses.
