As you may recall, I had assembled a team of eightpeople, including myself, representing all areas of the police department. The team was charged with making recommendations on what items could be purchased with these funds, and to prioritise the list of items.. At the time then was about $2,10,000 available and the Forms Committee recommended to the full Council purchase of a number of items, totaling $134C300. Subsequently the expenditures were approved. One of the items that was presented to the Finance Committee but was not immediately recommended was the puncheon of three unmarked vehicles. Although supportive tithe request, the Committee asked that the purchase be comdinatei with Bob Dawes, Motor Pool Director, in order to wants that the procedure would fie with his overall fleet maintenance and replacement plan. I have since met with Bob Dawes and he has indicated that purchasing either new or used (or combination Barred) cars would he suitable. The forfeiture team had recommended the purchase dthree unmarked vehicles for the Criminal [nvenigatioo Division (CID). One tithe vehicles would replace a 1992 Buick that has almady been retired, and another would replace a 1994 Jeep that has 170,000 miles on it and needs significant rear -end work. Both of these vehicles were forfeiture vehielea in the first place, and wen used by membra of the department assigned to either the violent crimes task force cribs dog task force at the U.S, Attorney's Office. A third vehicle was recommended because of the community policing positions approved under the COPS program. For of these officers have been assigned to the CID. Two vehicle were purchased in 1998 thanks to ablack grant, bringing the total number of vehicles assigned to CID to 9. Two can are assigned to task been members, leaving 13 ogcets competing for the use of 8 vehicles. The committee recommended that W,000 be set aside to purchase the vehicles. I am seeking the approval of the Furnace Committee m allocate $45,00(f from the forfeiture variant (60020309030) so that Bob Dawes and I can proceed with the purchase.
