commentary:
This amendment, although relatively minor In nature, Is required to facilitate the signage
requested by the Coun Foundation and the University of Maine Art Museum on the Harlow
Street side of Norumbega Hall. Staff has reviewed the DDD and located only two other parcels
which could avail themselves of the proposed change — United Bank and Key Plaza. This was
reviewed, preliminarily by the Committee and recommended for placement on the Council
Agenda for first reading and referral. The Council may note this item has also appeared on an
HPC agenda. The HPC, however, cannot ad on. it until the amendment Is passed.

CITY OF BANGOR
(TITLE.) Ordinance, Amending the Sign Code - Chapter 260 § 260-8.2F.
Be it ordained by the City of Bangor, as foiiowr That the Sign Code, Chapter160,
§ 260-8.1F be amended as follows;
F. Free-standing Signs:
(1) Notwithstanding the sign area limitations in subsection E, above, one on -
premises frestanding directory sign shall be permitted, p % ded that "-mat

sign can meet the required setback.
(2) All freestanding signs authorized under this provision shall be subject to the
following oontlitions:
(a) Signs may be erected only upon review and approval of the Revitalization
Area Design Review Committee (as established in Chapter 71, Bangor
Center Revitalization Area, § 71-9, of the Cade of the City of Bangor).
(b) The City Engineer must approve the sign and provide written evidence
that the design and exact location of such a sign will not constitute a
traffic hazard.
(c) The sign shall either be nonilluminated or indirectly illuminated and
materials and colors shall harmonize with the exterior of the building and
with buildings in the surrounding area.
(e)W) Directory signs will meet the following requirements:
[1] All signs and parts thereof will be set back at least two feet from
any property line, and no variance will be permitted from this
provision.
[2] In no case will such signs exceed 50 square feet in area or 15 feet
in height.
[3] Directory signs will be limited to the following dimension limb in
accordance with building size:
