Resolve, Calling Upon the State of Maine to Continue to Support and Expand the Drug Court program. WHEREAS, Juvenile Drug Treatment Courts have recently been implemented in several Counties, including Penobscot; and WHEREAS, a pilot Adult Drug Treatment Court In Cumberland County has also been established and has been recognized as a success; and WHEREAS, due to this success, recommendations have been made to expand the Adult program into York, Washington, and Penobscot Counties; and WHEREAS, these programs have proven to be an effective mechanism to deal not only with the criminal justice aspects of drug abuse but also to move clients into treatment and support their recovery; and WHEREAS, given the growing opioid addiction problem in Penobscot County and other regions of Maine, we must continue to support and expand programs which have shown success in assisting those who are addicted into recovery; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Bangor has previously gone on record in support of the establishment of a Juvenile Drug Court in Penobscot County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CIT' COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, THAT: We call upon the Governor and the State Legislature to continue to support and expand the Drug Treatment Court program to insure that all suitable candidates are afforded the opportunity to participate. Toward this end, the State should continue to provide the necessary matching funds for existing programs, be preapared to assume full funding should federal funds become unavailable, and provide an Adult Drug Treatment Court in Penobscot County.
