CITY OF BANGOR
(TITLE.) Resolve, Calling Upon the State of Maine to Continue to Support and Expand the Drug
Court program.
WHEREAS, Juvenile Drug Treatment Courts have recently been implemented in several
Counties, including Penobscot; and
WHEREAS, a pilot Adult Drug Treatment Court In Cumberland County has also been
established and has been recognized as a success; and
WHEREAS, due to this success, recommendations have been made to expand the Adult
program into York, Washington, and Penobscot Counties; and
WHEREAS, these programs have proven to be an effective mechanism to deal not only with
the criminal justice aspects of drug abuse but also to move clients into treatment
and support their recovery; and
WHEREAS, given the growing opioid addiction problem in Penobscot County and other regions
of Maine, we must continue to support and expand programs which have shown
success in assisting those who are addicted into recovery; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Bangor has previously gone on record in support of
the establishment of a Juvenile Drug Court in Penobscot County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CIT' COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR,
THAT:
We call upon the Governor and the State Legislature to continue to support and expand the
Drug Treatment Court program to insure that all suitable candidates are afforded the
opportunity to participate. Toward this end, the State should continue to provide the
necessary matching funds for existing programs, be preapared to assume full funding should
federal funds become unavailable, and provide an Adult Drug Treatment Court in Penobscot
County.
