Pursuant to Title 21-A, Maine Law on Elections, §101 "The municipal officers of each municipality shall appoint in writing a qualified Registrar of voters by January, 1st of each odd-numbered year" The Registrar must be swum in by January 1, 2001. If the Clerk also serves as the Registrar, the Clerk must be appointed and mom in to serve the 2-year term as Registrar. Once the Registrar has been appointed, the Clerk shall notify the Secretary of State of the name of the Registrar within 10 days aRerthe Registrar is appointed and swom. (Section 101.4) If the Municipal Officers have not already appointed the Registrar, please remind them of this requirement so that they can appoint someone right away. Remember, once a person has been appointed as Registrar, if a vacancy occurs timing this 2-year tem, the Municipal Officers must appoint a person to fill the vacancy within 15 days of notification of ted vacancy. If they, do not appoint, the Clerk may appoint to fill the vacancy. Otherwise, the Clerk becomes Registrar Pro Tem.
