Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, the first Arbor Day was observed in Nebraska, where more than a million trees were planted; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and WHEREAS, trees reduce the erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life giving oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource providing us with paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and beauty for our community; and WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and WHEREAS, the staff and students of Vine Street School are demonstrating leadership in promoting a clean environment by planting and caring for trees NOW THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH m. BALDACCI MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and citizens of Bangor, we do hereby proclaim April 28, 2017 as Arbor Day in the City of Bangor. I urge all of our citizens to set aside time on that day and throughout the year to appreciate the importance of trees to our quality of life and to engage in efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.
