Item/Subject: Omer -Authorizing the City Manager to apply for up to $60,000 in funds as
part of the U.S. Department of Justice project Safe Neighborhoods
initiative
Responsible Department: Police
Recently I learned that there is up m $60,000 available in federal funds offered through the
United States Attorney's Office as part of their Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) iinda0ve. PSN Is a
federally sponsored Initiative aimed at reducing vloleat crime Involving guns. I have been member of
the PSN Committee since it was established in 2002. The committee has recommended the support and
expansion of the two violent crime task forces in the state as a means to achieve Meir goal. Bangor PD
currently supports the Eastern Maine Violent Crimes Task Force by contributing one investigator. The
Maine Sate Police, Penobscot County Sheriffs Office, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms,
and Hancock County Sheriffs Office also provide officers. Funds would be used W purchase equipment
and provide overtime funds for the task force. The U.S. Attorneys Office (which is not eligible to apply)
has agreed to manage the program; the City of Bangor would act as the fiscal agent. There is no match
requirement.
