Responsible Department Planning Division Commentary: This Council Order will authorize the CM Manager to apply for, receive and disburse Project Canopy Grant Funds, Gran: monies up to a maximum of $10,000 per applicant with a required minimum local match of 50% ($5,000) are available through the Maine Forest Service's 2003 Project Canopy Assistance Program. The local match Is Included in the Forestry Division and Public Works budget. This grant, W awarded, will enable the Forestry Division to undertake the maintenance and resource managenem activities proposed in Bangor's Community Forestry Improvement Program; .specifically, .Mail Area Beautification through esplanade plantings on Stillwater Avenue, Time Management In the Maine Business Enterprise Park on Maine Avenue, and City-wide Time Improvements, especially, pruning. Order, Authorizing Application to the Maine Forest Service for 2003 Project Canopy Assistance Program Grant. &the Gry Cmwa free Cev f&e r WHEREAS, the Maine Department of Conservation's Forest Service and the Pine Tree State Aboretum, through the establishment of the Project Canopy Assistance Program, recognizes that comprehensive resource management of community forests and related natural resources is beneficial to maintaining and enhancing the environment and quality of life for Maine citizens; and WHEREAS, the Project Canopy Program helps communities focus on the tangiable benefits that long-term forestry programs on provide; and WHEREAS, the City Council adopted the City of Bangor Comprehensive Plan 2000 on 3uly 24, 2000 that identifies nah ml resource management goels; and WHEREAS, the City now seeks funds to assist in the implementation of the recommendations of its Comprehensive Plan 2000 and the Bangor Community Forestry Improvement Program; and WHEREAS, the Project Canopy Assistance Program in the Maine forest Service makes gram funds available to communities for Urban and Community Forestry activities; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR - --- THAT, the City Manager be authorized to apply to the Maine Forest Service for a 2003 Project Canopy Assistance Grant; and that the City Manager be authorized to receive and disburse such funds in accordance with the grant guidelines, if the City is successful in its application.
