The Department of Health and Human Services has approached us to expand our
Immunization program by adding a public heal@ immunization educator. They propose
to amend not current $10,000 armual January—December 31, 2005 eonnaceby adding a
$40-50Kimmase. The 06 contract would be increased from the normal$30," grantto
$100,000.
From now until January le, we would be expected to do the following:
• Participate in 2-3stateplanting meetings. Portland is being asked to
participate as well.
• Submit a grant commune for 20061hat would include new and expanded
dehverablea
• Procure o%cespace(we have room with Glona Cole's retirement) and
equipment (PC, phone, eta)
• Post position and advertise
The goal with this position is to increase immunization rates (Maine has gone from 5n in
the US to 27n in the past few years). The s aregies would be to visit primary care and
pedmuncoffices, have a presence at health fairs and other public fosmns, eta. The
northenm 5 counties of the state would be the territories involved.
Patty Hasngtoo, Dale UWA ouhatio izatipu Program Director, and ;believe tbs ice_
good oppoinindy for the Immunization Program and the City.
• It would contribute much needed inliustrunnne to our hrimunizstion
Department (office help, contribution to administrative overhead, can).
• The end to admmisWr$100,000 print is not much more than a$10,000
Gant.
• We have been given the OK to fromload contract by doing things like
paying rent for' W with'05 contract extension, buying needed supplies
and equipment with'05 money, leaving more for personnel m'M.
• We feed confident we can accomplish what would be expected. Outputs
would be how we are measured initially with outcomes measured down
the road.
The sone wants to work with existing contractors (Portland and Bangor) initially, but may

The State is seeking a response to their proposal. We would recommend that the City
respond affirmatively. Ifthe City and State ate in agreement, a formal grant amendment
a
and acceptance and approMaton of these fun& would need to be approved by the
Council.I will plan to attend the meeting b answer any question that you may have.
