Item/Subject: ORDER, Establishing a Taxicab Surcharge.
Responsible Department Legal
As an element of an overall set of interim adjustments to taxicab rates, the Finance Committee has
recommended that the City approve a $1.00 per trip surcharge to address me recent dramatic increase in
the cost of gasoline. An ordinance amendment memorizing such a surcharge appears elsewhere on
tonight's agenda. This order would actually approve the a rcharge. The surcharge would be permissive,
i.e., at the discretion of time drivel, and shall be for the sale benefit of the person responsible for paying
for fuel her the cab. 1t will be in effect until April 21, 2006, at which time it will expire. The City will
protide each taxicab with a notice of the surcharge, and the notice must be prominently displayed.
Finally, the surcharge will take effect ten days from the Council's approval ofthis order, Thistenday
period recognizes time required waiting period before the ordinance authorizing the surcharge actually
goes into effect and will allow sufficient time for the appropriate notices to be prepared and distributed.
