TEN MAJOR CHANGES IN THE
2005 NEC
1. 210.5(c) & 215.12(c) identification of Ungrounded Conductors in branch and
feeder circuits -
Allows for color -coding and other approved madcings to branch and
feeder circuits a1 panel boards on wiring.
2 210.8(a)(9) Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters
Expands the requirements in dwelling units to include every
kitchen, family room, dining room, library, den, sunroom, recreation
room as well as hallways.
3. 210.12 Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters
Requires "combination type" (GFCI/AFCI) for dwelling unit
bedrooms. Though included in the 2005 Code the provision could
not go into effect until 2008 because manufacturers do not have the
ability to manufacture them in sufficient quantity.
4. 2404(c) Overcument Protection: Protection of Conductors
For devices rated no more than 1800 amps, the next higher
standard of overcurenl device rating shall be permitted to be used
with conditions spelled out in the Code.
5. 313.3 Handhole Enclosures
Defines the use of handhole enclosures- a junction box comparable
to a miniature manhole but providing hand access only

6. 430 pt. X Adjustable speed drive systems
The increasing popularity of these systems is being driven by their
increased reliability, lower energy consumption and longer lifespan.
The BWD is changing all of its pump motors to this kind. The Code
brings all regulation of VSPM into one section.
Z 409 (New) Industrial Control Panels
Perhaps the most significant change to the NEC, this change
addresses an issue that has long troubled installers and inspectors
with regard to field manufactured, non -listed control panels.
6. 506(New) Zone 20,21 and 22 location for Flammable Dusts
This section abates an entirely new article cancelling a zone
clarification for electrical and electronic equipment and wiring in
locations where fire and explosion hazards exist due to combustible
dusts.
9. 527.4.J.1 Support of Temporary Installations- Including Holiday Decorative
Lighting
Requires cable assemblies and flexible cables and cards be
supported in place at intervals that insure they will be protected
from physical damage- support can be in the form of staples, cable
ties or similar things. Also this section finally clears ambiguity -
allowing vegetation to be used to support overhead spans of
branch circuit conductors for the lights.
10. Natural and Artificial & Man-made Bodies of Water (New)
This new section was added to govern installations, in and adjacent
to, bodies of water that aren't currently governed by Article 660
which pertains to swimming pools, fountains and similar
installations.
