Commentary:
We have been approached by several individuals with close Res to recently retired City ForesMr
Rolland Perry with a request that the Ory consider naming the City Forest after Rolland. By way
of background, Rolland served as City Forester for 91 years, from 1969 W his retirement last
year. During this Wood, he was Instrumental In developing and maintaining the Cry's forests
and public trees. His accomplishments included developing management plans and trails in
Brawn, Prentiss, and Essex Woods and the City Forest During his tenure, he was responsible
for planting over 800,000 trees and seedlings throughout the Ws paps, rights-of-way, and
public spaces, In part to replace the thousands of trees bst W Dutch Elm disease.
One of RillancPs proudest achievements was fire preservation and development of the City
Forest, over 6511 acres of largely forested land located near the Cry's Bangor Mall commercial
area and largely within the watershed of the Penjajawoc Marsh. Through many years of effort,
he worked consistently to protect this property against potential development, manage it In
Improve its timber and habitat values, and W develop a multi-purpose trail system to enable
residents and visitors to enjoy, this area.
Por these reasons, we believe it would be appropriate to recognize his efforts by naming the
Forest after him. Without Rolland's fireless adwsce , this Forest would not exist.
