A separate Council order setting June 10, 2008 as the date for dust election appears elsewhere on tonight's agenda. In order to hold the election on lune 10'^, the City Centel must take formal action to approve the budget within ten days prior to the election, or by lune Ia. the attached Reserve Indicates net the Council All take a formal vote on Mat budget at a special Council Meeting on June 2, 2008. In order to avoid any last minute disagreements at the time the Council takes the formal vote on the Select budget, staff recommended that a vote be taken on a resolve indicating the intent of the Council to approve the school budget early enough In the budget process to allow tone, 9 necessary, M address and resolve any Issues or disagreements. ThIs proposal was accepted by terse Councilors present at a recent budget meeting. The attached resolve will also, therefore, Indicate the intention of the Council, barring unforeseen circumstances, to approve the School Department budget as adopted and recommended by the Bangor School Committee. Resolve, Indicating the Intent of the City Counal to Approve the School Department Budget As Adapted by the Bangor School Committee. WHEREAS, as an element of the State's School Consolidation legislation, the Fiscal Year N budget of the Bangor School Department must be submitted to the voters for validation subsequent to its approval by the School Committee and the City Council; and WHEREAS, the most appropriate date for such election is in conjunction with the primary election scheduled for June 10, 2008; and WHEREAS, In order to vote on the school budget at that election, the City Council must formally approve 2 within can days prior W June 1&; and WHEREAS, sufficient time must also be provided for the School Department to work with the City Clerk W prepare ballots and develop required information for the voters; and WHEREAS, it is essentJal, therefore, that the City Council take action on the School budget earlier in the budget process than has been the City's prior practice; NOW, THEREFORE, BE R RESOLVED BY TIE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT: Barring unforeseen circumstances, it is the intent of the Bangor City Council to approve the School Department budget as adopted and presented by the Bangor School Committee; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT Formal votes on the H 09 School Budget shall be taken at a Special City Council meeting W be held on Monday, June 2, 2008; and BE LT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: The Gty Clerk shall coordinate with the School Department to schedule and hold a school budget validation election in conjunction with the primary election to be held on June 10, 2008.
