Item/Subject: Ordinance, Deleting Section 291-28 A of the Code of Ordinances
— Left Turns Prohibited — State and Howard
Responsible Depend. a: Ory Council
Commentary:
At request, Councilor Meeler has asked that the Council eliminate the anent left tum
prohibitions at the intersection at Howard and State Streets.
The left turn prohibitions at this intersectlon were enacted by the City Council on a six month
Mal basis In We Spring of 2007. This action was recommended, in conjunction with the traffic
calming measures Installed on Howard Street, to address traffic volume and speed
considerations on Howard as well as to address the intersection of State and Howard which had
been identified by the State as a high crash location. At theend of Me six month period, this
prohibition was made permanent when the Council adopted Council Order 07-328 In clobber
2007. Since then and throughout this period, the turning prohibition has been effectetl by the
temporary placement on construction barrels in State Street pending installation of a raised
median at that location. Public Works had scheduled Mat work eerier this month but delayed it
when staff became aware Mat there might be an interest in eliminadng the restriction.
There Is a significant amount of background material available on this Issue, Including Me traffic
study pedonned by Ames A/E, a summary of a neighborhood meeting held on this Issue, and
the resubs of a related survey. Should any Councilor Wish a copy of any of this material, we
would be happy to supply it
