Commentary: The Commission on Cultural Development's mission is to promote the development of
Bangor as a regional arts center Nat nurtures the artistic and cultural a resslon of it diverse peoples. The
Commission has been authorized by the City Council to review applications to the Ory for funding from arts
and cultural organizations and th recommend a course of action to the City Council for their review and
consideration.
The Maine Discovery Museum has requested $10,000 from the Qty as part of a $21,500 public awareness
campaign to amounts the first major new permanent exhibits it has developed since opening. The
Commission for Cultural Development recommends Ponding the full amount requested. In reviewing
MDM's application the Commission noted that the new exhibits, 7radevAnds" and "Adscap are
conuytually strong and build on Bangor's serge of place In Maine and the world. The Commission
agrees that a well -conceived public awareness campaign is essential to leading the museum's stakeholders
and potential visitors know that there are new reasons m support and visit the Museum. The Commission
also noted that MOM has already received nearly $5,00D of the additional $11,500 it needs from other
sources for the program.
The Commission for Cultural Development recommends that City Council approve a grant Of $10,000.

(TITLE.) ORDER, Authorizing Grant ro the Maine Discovery Museum for $10,000 in Partial
Support for a Public Awareness Campaign to Promote Major New Museum Exhibits
Opening In 2008
WHEREAS, the Commissin on Cultural Developments mission is to promote the development
of Bangor as a regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and cultural
expression of its diverse peoples; and
WHEREAS, the Commission is authorized to review grant applications from arts and cultural
organizations and recommend a course of adion to the City Council for their
review and consideration; and
WHEREAS, the Maine Discovery Museum submitted an application for $10,000 in partial
support of a $21,500 public awareness campaign to promote major new
museum exhibits opening in 2008; and
WHEREAS, the Commission believes that a well -conceived public awareness campaign is
essential to letting )hemuseum's stakeholders and potential visitors know that
there are new reasons to support and Asti the Maine Discovery Museum; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted tht MDM has already received from other sources nearly
$5,000 of dre additional $11,500 it needs for the program; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted In Its review process that the project met all funding
criteria and the application was complete, and no matelot weaknesses were
noted in either the project description or the application;
BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF WE CM OF BANGOR THAT
$10,000 be granted to the Maine Discovery Museum for a public awareness campaign regarding
new museum exibia, said amount to be paid before November 30, 2007.
