Commentary: The Commission on Cultural Development's mission is to promote the development of
Bangor as a regional arts cemerthat nurturesthe artistic and cultural expression of its diverse peoples, The
Commission has been autlmrized by the City Counnl to review applications to the City for funding from aft
and cultural organizations and to recommend a course of action to the City Council for Meir review and
consideration.
A group of volunteers has beamed up with the Bangor Public Ubrary, as fiscal agent, m Produce a Bangor
Book Festival in Downtown Bangor on Columbus Day weekend, 2007. The group Includes Wividuals with
strong experience In literary arenas and festivals and connections with authors. At Me time of the grant
application, 33 Maine authors had already agreed to participate. The total fund-raising goal for the project is
$25,000, and the project had received funding of $10,000 from blue Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.
The Bangor Book Festival has requested $5,000 from the City of Bangor.
In its review of the application, the Commission noted that this is a nen event constructed to appeal ro all
age groups and to promote and build audiences for Maine authors. They noted that holding the activities
downtown is healthy for local businesses, which will provide venues, and Mat the majority of the project
funding will come bora sources other than the City.
The Commission recommends that Me City Council approve the full gram request of $5,000, but that Its use
be restricted M marketing costs and food/lodging for authors.

(TITLE.) ORDFR, Authorizing Grant of $5,000 to Bangor Book Festival, Bangor Public
library, Fiscal Agent
WHEREASf a group of volunteers with experience in literary arenas and festivals and
connections W6 authors has teamed up with the Bangor Public Ubrary as fiscal
agent to produce a Bangor Book Festival in Downtown Bangor on Columbus Day
weekend 2007; and
WHEREAS, at the time of the grant application, 33 Maine authors had agreed to participate;
and
WHEREAS, the total fund-raising goal for the project is $25,000, the project has received
funding of $10,000 from the Stephen and Tabitha king Foundation, and the

NOW, THEREFORE, BE U ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNQL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR
THAT
$5,000 be authorized to the Bangor Book Festival, Bangor Public Library, Fiscal Agent, and that
its use be restricted to marketing costs and food/lodging for authors.
