HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-06-13 11-190 ORDERItem kc. 1,. 190 Dal June 13, 2011 Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing Application to Maine Department of Environmental Protection for Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Funding Responsible Department Finance commentary: If approved, the attached Order would authorize staff to apply for $59,620 gram from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection m Implement non -point source pollution projects in the PenjaJawoc and Birch Stream Watersheds. Combined with the local match of $37,506, the total project will be $92,126. Each year the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) solicits proposals from municipalities and offer non -profits for implementation of nonpoint source pollution control projects. The City of Bangor Is committed to Implementing the recommendations in it watershed management plans for Penjajawoc and Birch Streams, the streams Identified as the Oty's top priority streams. The total Penjajawoc proposal is $62,050 and Includes a grant request in the amount of $36,620 and local match of $25,930, which is mostly in-kind with $3600 for monitoring. The project proposal is a partnership between the business community and the City and would fund the implementation of several recommended sto:mwater treatments systems within the Penjajawoc Watershed. When completed, the project would serve as a model for other businesses In the region. The Rich Stream proposal is $30,076 and Includes a grant request of $18,000 and a local match of 12,076, which is largely in -land. This project would fund a critically needed assessment of the stream channel, stream banks, Flow and erosion patterns, and other physical characteristics of the stream. The report would include a prioritized list of in -stream improvements that are needed in order to stabilize the stream and to improve the water quality of the water passing through it and result In the beginning of a work plan to address this watershed.
