Commemary:
The Commission on Cultural Development's mission Is W promote the development of Bangor as a
regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and cultural expression of Its diverse peoples. The
Commission has been authorired by the City Council to review applications to the Cry for funding from
arts and cultural organizations and to recommend a course of action to the City Counal for their review
and consideration.
The Bangor Museum and History Center submitted an applimbon for $2,000 to fund the Great fire of
1911 Walking Tour. The program, an interactive treasure hunt, provides the opportunity for children
and their families W learn about the Great Fre of 1911 and how it changed Bangor forever. Bangor
schoolchildren are wanking with Bangor Museum and History Center W create the map, brochure and IN
content. Maps will be available at no cost to the public beginning in lune at the Bangor Museum and
History Center, Maine Discovery Museum and me Bangor Public Library.
The Commission noted that Ne application was extremely hwrough and well written. The most notable
strengths of this program are its involvement of children in the program design. Additionally the
activities will teach children and their parents about this significant event in Bangors history.
Collaborations are very strong and partners represent all aspects of the community. The Commission for
Cultural Development recommends that the City Council approve a grant of $2,000.
(NOTE: The commission on Guttural Development dd not receive an approprbem for FY 2011. The funds
avail ble are a cammver of $57,950 from FY 2010. The Cummissbn will have $16,950 remaining avalbble, if this
grant is approved.)

CITY OF BANGOR
(TIRE.) ORDER, Awarding Grant to Bangor Museum and Hlstory Center for $2,000 to Fund
Great Fire of 1911 Chi/Chen Y Walking Tour
WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Developments mission is to promote the
development of Bangor as a regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and
cultural expression of its diverse peoples; and
WHEREAS, the Commission is authorized to review grant applications from arts and cultural
organizations and recommend a course of action to the City Council for their
review and consideration; and
WHEREAS, the Bangor Museum and History Center has submitted an application for $2,000
to fund Great Fre of 1911 Children's Walking Tour; and
WHEREAS, 2011 is Me centennial anniversary of The Great Fre of 1911, a very significant
event in Bangor's history; and
WHEREAS, Bangor Museum and History Center is partnering with the Bangor School
Department to involve children in the centennial commemoration; and
WHEREAS, Bangor children are directly Involved with creation of Me map; and
WHEREAS, the Great Fire of 1911 Children's Walking Tour will teach children about the
significance of the Great Fire and how it changed Bangor forever; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted in its review process that the project met funding criteria
for a "small grant", the application was complete, and no material weaknesses
were notetl in elther the project description or the application; and
WHEREAS, Me Commission noted that strengths of this application include its involvement of
Bangor school children; and
WHEREAS, colaboradons are extremely strong and programs will be accessible W the
community at large:
BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT
$2,000 be granted to the Bangor Museum and History Center from the Cultural appropriation.
