Commentary:
The Commission an Cultural Development's mission is to promote the development of Bangor as a
regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and cultural expression of Its diverse peoples. The
Commission has been authorized by the City Council to review applications to the City for funding from
arts and cultural organizations and m recommend a course of action tu the Cry Council for their review
and mnslderation.
The Maine Discovery Museum submitted an application for $2,000 to fund Art in fine Heart of Downtmvn
an artist in residency program. The program provides the opportunity far children and their families to
interact with local artists. Artists conduct worlshops and teach children different forms of art (ex. Fiber
ary woodcarving, painting etc). Funding from the cultural appropriation will extend the program through
the 2011-2012 academic year.
The Commission noted that the application was extremely thorough and well written. The most notable
strengths of this program are Its opportunity to connect children with local ardsts. Additionally the
activities allow for families to work together to produce artwodc. Collaborations are very strong and
partners represent all aspects of the community. The Commission for Cultural Development recommends
that the Cry Council approve a grant of $2,OW.

(TITLE.) ORDER, Awarding Grant to Maine Discovery Museum for $2,OW to Fund Artin the
Heart ofDownmwn (Artist in Residence Froyram)
WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Developments mission Is to promote the
development of Bangor as a regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and
cultural expression of its diverse peoples; and
WHEREAS, the Commission is authorized to review grant applications from arts and cultural
organizations and recommend a course of action to the City Council for their
review and consideration; and
WHEREAS, the Maine Discovery Musuem, has submitted an application for $2,000 to fund
Art in the Heart of Downtown, an artist in residence program; and
WHEREAS, Art in the Heart of Downtown features a different artist each month in the vacant
store space at Maine Discovery Museum; and
WHEREAS, Artists show their work and Conduct worldhop; for children and their families;
and
WHEREAS, the program has experlencad success this spring and funding will allow forthe
program to run during the 2011-2012 academic year; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted in its review. process that the project met funding criteria
for a "small grant", the application was complete, and no material weaknesses
were noted in either the project description or the application; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted that strengths of this application include Its wide appeal to
children and families; and
WHEREAS, colaborations are eMremely strong and programs will be accessible to the
community at large:
BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT
$2,000 be granted to Maine Discovery Museum from the Cultural appropriation.
