Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing the Police Department to Apply for up to $2,000 in
Funds from the State of Maine Bureau of Highway Safety for the Purpose of Increasing
Seatbelt Enforcement and Education Efforts

Commentary: The State of Maine, Bureau of Highway Safety has grant funds available
to assist local and state law enforcement agencies with seatbelt education and
enforcement efforts. if approved, the City will receive $2,000 for increased seatbelt
education and enforcement for two a two week period in May. The purpose of the grant
is to educate motorists and increase awareness of the dangers of not wearing seatbelt.
The grant funds are available to provide overtime reimbursement as a means to
increase enforcement and education efforts. Grant funds will be distributed to the City
as reimbursement for expenses Is requested. This grant was reviewed by the
Government Operations Committee and unanimously recommended for approval of the
full Council.
