Commentary: The Commission on Cultural Developmen's mission is to promote the derelopment of Bangor as
a regional arts carter Mat nurtures the artistic and cultural expression of Its diverse peoples. The Commission has
been authorized by me City Council to review applications M the City for funding from arts and cultural
organizations and to recommem a course of action to the City Council for Mer review and consideration.
The Fenobsml Theatre Companry submitted an application for $25,000 M fund pertomwxes of To Alla
Awrkkgamand related programming. Penobscot Theatre Company will produce a Wessional stage adaptation
of Harper Lee's To Killa Nocklayblydas part of the theatre's Malnstage meaMal season. In concert with this
Production Penobscot Theatre Company will partner with key community organizations (including most prominently
the Danger Public thereof and Me University of Maine) to produce a range of multi-dbciplinary events Mat cull
together a broad public audience add highlgM Bangor as a cultural center.
In either to the Message production the programming in concert with the Bangor Public Library's "Bangor
Reads" program will offer ancillary public events Including book discussion aeo;dm , lectures, pane
disw5sbn5/symposium and thlkbark sessions. Prognammitg includes; banging renowned writer Mary McDonagh
Murphy b the Opera House m discuss her recent book Smut Amster and Boo and to the University of Maine where
she will Partch ate in a classroom screening and discussion of her recent documentary Hey, aoa: /la/je/Lea aW

film adaptation of To Ai/la MxkiigbMM the Bangor Opera House.
The Commission noted that be applica0on was extranely, thorough and well written. The most notable strengths
of this pmhictbn-andTelandpmgmmmitgarrtat me mllabomtlans are very strong and Parbers represewal —
aspects of the community. The Carmarthen for Cultural Devebpment recommends that the Cry Council approve a
grant of $18,000,

CITY OF BANGOR
(TITLE.) ORDER, Awarding Grant to Penobscot Theatre Company for $18,000 to
Fund To Kii/a Mockingbird production and programs
WHEREAS,
the Commission on Cultural Development's mission is to promote the
development of Bangor as a regional area center that nurtures the artistic and
cultural expression of its diverse peoples; and
WHEREAS,
the Commission is authorized to review grant applications from arts and cultural
organizations and recommend a course of action to the City Council for their
review and consideration; and
WHEREAS,
the Penobscot Theatre Company has submitted an application for $25,000 to
fund performances of To rill Mock/ngbirdand related programming; and
WHEREAS,
Penobscot Theatre Company will produce a professional stage adaptation of
Harper tee's To Kil/a Mockingbiiidas part of the theatre's Mainstage Oceatrical
season; and
WHEREAS,
in addition to the Mainstage production the programming in concert with the
Bangor Public tibarary's "Bangor Reads" program will offer ancillary public events
including book discussion sessions, lectures, panel discussions/symposium, film
screening and talkback sessions; and
WHEREAS,
the Commission noted in its review process that the project met funding client
for a "large.grant" and the application
was complete, and no material -- -
weaknesses were noted in either the project description or the appliance; and
WHEREAS,
the Commission noted that strengths of this application include a wide variety of
programming In addition to the Mainstage production; and
WHEREAS,
colaborations are a#remelt' strong and programs wlll be accessible to the
community at large; and
WHEREAS,
the Commission recommends $18,000 be granted to the Penobscot Theatre
Company for the production of To Kill a Mocklrrgbirdand related activltihe:
BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNQL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT
$18,000 be granted to the Penobscot Theatre Company from the Cultural appropriation.
