Item No, i
Date: October 12 2011
Item/Subject: Ordinance, Amending Chapter 14, City Electrons, Section 14-5, Compensation
of Election Officials, of the Code of the Ory of Bangor, By Amending the Wage of Election
Officials
Responsible Departmenin City Clerk
Commentary: By City Ordinance, election workers are compensated for their time at rates
between $0.50 and $1.50 above minimum wage. The current O finance keys election worker
compensation W the federal minimum wage. However, Maine's state minimum wage is
generally higher than the federal minimum wage, and by law, the City is required to pay
whichever rate is higher. In practice, the Cary has been using the state figure Instead of the
federal amount.
This Ordinance amendment would set compensation of election workers at a rate keyed W either
federal or state minimum wage, whichever Is higher. This will ensure a legal and appropriate
amount of compensation and bring our ordinance into alignment with past practice.
This amendment came before the Government Operations Committee on October 11, 2011.
