Item Nos i 31 r?
Date: October 24, 2011
Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing the Parks and Recreation Department to Proceed with an
Effort to Replace the Gazebo formerly located at Paul Bunyan Park.
Responsible Department: Parks and Recreation
Commentary:
This Order will authorize the Parks and Recreation Department to begin the process of replacing
the Gazebo formerly located at Paul Bunyan Park. The Department has recently been
approached by a group of individuals who are interested in assisting with replacing and
relocating the gazebo, which was dismantled as part of the Arena construction project. Among
those individuals are representatives from the Bangor Band. The gazebo has been a popular
and heavily utilized amenity and there is significant sentiment to replace it. The group will work
in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department to identify a suitable location and is
willing to seek donations to help cover construction costs.
This was reviewed and unanimously recommended for approval by the Government Operations
Committee on October 11, 2011.

MEMORANDUM

SUBJ: Gazebo Replacement, Paul Bunyan Park
DATE: October 4, 2011
When the construction schedule for the new arena was confirmed during the summer, a
discussion commenced regarding the gazebo located in Paul Bunyan Park. The
gazebo has hosted a variety of community activities including being the primary summer
venue for the Bangor Band. Given the scope of the construction, the gazebo could not
stay in its current location.
Based on advice from engineers from Cianbro as well as our own City engineers and
staff, it was determined that the cost and possible damage were would be too large to
allow us to move the gazebo. We were left with little alternative other than to dismantle
the structure.
An effort has been started to embark on a fundraising campaign to build a new gazebo.
A group of enthusiastic supporters have met with me to start the process. Along with a
fundraising process, there will need to be a discussion regarding a new location for a
new gazebo. There has been a list of tentative locations developed and a review
process started. We will be returning to this committee to review with you those
locations along with their potential strengths and weaknesses.
We are asking the Committee to recommend authorizing the Parks and Recreation
Department to work with this citizens group to replace and relocate the gazebo. This
authorization would be similar to our recent efforts with the Bangor Community Garden
and the restoration of the Paul Bunyan Statue.
I will be available at your meeting to answer any questions you may have.
