PROCLAIMING OCTOBER TO BE ARTOBER, A MONTH LONG CELEBRATION OF
ARTS AND CULTURE, IN THE CITY OF BANGOR
WHEREAS, arts and culture play a unique and intrinsically valuable role in the lives of
our families, our communities, and our state; and,
WHEREAS, arts education research shows that the arts help to foster discipline,
creativity, imagination, self-expression, and problem solving skills while
also helping to develop a heightened appreciation of beauty and cross-
cultural understanding; and,
410 WHEREAS, according to an economic impact study conducted by Americans for the
Arts, the nonprofit arts and cultural sector also strengthens national our
economy by generating $135.2 billion in total economic activity and
supporting the full-time equivalent of more than 4 million jobs; and
WHEREAS, the month of October has been recognized as National Arts and
Humanities Month by thousands of arts and cultural organizations,
communities, and states across the country, as well as by the White
House and Congress for more than two decades; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Bangor applauds the dedication, passion, and contribution of
the arts and culture organizations, employees, supporters, and volunteers
of our region;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nelson E. Durgin, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf
of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim October to be
ARTober, a month to celebrate the arts in culture in Bangor.
