The Bangor Museum and History Center submitted an application for funding of $5,000 in partial support
of the "No Boundaries: Women's Role in the Civil War" Community Programming Initiative. Grant funds
will support education of Bangor area residents about the changing social roles of Maine women during
the Civil War and how those changes made future Civil Rights and Suffrage Movements possible. This is
a large scale community education initiative including public outreach and hands-on school programs
through 2012; resulting in a series of activities and products which will supplement and enhance their
2012 annual exhibit titled "No Boundaries: Women's Roles in the Civil War".
In its review of the application, the Commission noted that the program is unique in nature and will
reach a large cross section of the community through a variety of activities geared to different segments
of the population (children, teen, and seniors). The grant application was complete, well organized on
program approach, outreach and collaboration and met funding criteria. The Commission unanimously
recommends partial funding of the request at the level of $3,000. This grant was reviewed and
recommended for approval by the Business and Economic Development Committee at its meeting of
February 8, 2012.
(NOTE: The Commission on Cultural Development current available budget is 22,950. The Commission will have
$19,950 remaining available, if this grant is approved.)
