Item No. 12' 034 .
Date: December 122011
Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing Execution of Agreement between the City of Bangor, the
University of Maine and Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium
Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development
Commentary: This Order will authorize the execution of the agreement as a Sponsor community for
the 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium at the University of Maine. The City of Bangor
has been invited to participate in the 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium (SISS) at the
University of Maine. The Mission of the Schoodic Symposium is to hold biennial, international stone
sculpture symposia in Eastern Maine that will engage individuals and communities in public art and result
in a large public art collection in several counties." During Symposia, artists work on large-scale granite
sculpture outdoors for 6 weeks. The pieces produced are high quality, affordable sculptures that are
placed in the sponsoring communities.
The agreement designates the City of Bangor as a sponsoring community. Sponsor communities
fundraise for the sculpture, support logistics of the symposia and provide a permanent location for the
sculpture.
The Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously supported the City's involvement in this
effort and has identified a "Schoodic Symposium Committee" that will work with City staff and the
Commission on Cultural Development to oversee the project and fundraising for the sculpture.
