Date: December 122011 Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing Execution of Agreement between the City of Bangor, the University of Maine and Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development Commentary: This Order will authorize the execution of the agreement as a Sponsor community for the 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium at the University of Maine. The City of Bangor has been invited to participate in the 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium (SISS) at the University of Maine. The Mission of the Schoodic Symposium is to hold biennial, international stone sculpture symposia in Eastern Maine that will engage individuals and communities in public art and result in a large public art collection in several counties." During Symposia, artists work on large-scale granite sculpture outdoors for 6 weeks. The pieces produced are high quality, affordable sculptures that are placed in the sponsoring communities. The agreement designates the City of Bangor as a sponsoring community. Sponsor communities fundraise for the sculpture, support logistics of the symposia and provide a permanent location for the sculpture. The Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously supported the City's involvement in this effort and has identified a "Schoodic Symposium Committee" that will work with City staff and the Commission on Cultural Development to oversee the project and fundraising for the sculpture. ORDER, Authorizing Execution of Agreement between the City of Bangor, the University of Maine, and Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium WHEREAS, the City Council has established a Commission on Cultural Development and has assigned the Commmission the responsbility of reviewing public art, and to make recommendations for public art to the City Council; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor has been invited to participate in the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium (SISS) at the University of Maine; and WHEREAS, the Mission of SISS is "to hold biennial, international stone sculpture symposia in Eastern Maine that will engage individuals and communities in public art and result in a large public art collection in several counties"; and WHEREAS, during Symposia, July 22, 2012- August 31, 2012, seven international artists will design large-scale granite sculpture outdoors; and the pieces produced are high quality, affordable sculptures that are placed in the sponsoring communities; and WHEREAS, the program is unique in nature and will allow the City of Bangor to be part of a public art collection across a large region in Eastern Maine; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor will be listed in the "Sculpture Tour" brochure produced by SISS and distributed at rest areas and other tourist information sites throughout the state; and WHEREAS, significant community support for this project has been identified; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development has voted to unanimously support the City's involvement in this effort; and has identified a "Schoodic Symposium Committee" that will work with City staff and the Commission on Cultural Development to oversee the project and fundraising for the sculpture. BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT Catherine M. Conlow, City Manager, is hereby authorized, on behalf of the City of Bangor, to execute an agreeement with the University of Maine and Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium to serve as a Sponsor community for the 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium at the University of Maine.
