Item No. 12 009
Date: November 14, 2011
Item/Subject Order, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Maine Alliance for Arts Education
Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development
Commentary: The City Council has established and assigned to the Commission on Cultural
Development the responsibility to review grant applications to the City from arts and cultural
organizations and to provide to the City Council its recommendations for funding of the requests for the
Council's review and consideration.
The Maine Alliance for Arts Education submitted an application for funding of $2,000 in partial support of
the Building Community Through the Arts Program. Grant funds will support the participation of two
English classes at Bangor High School in an 8 hour artist in residence program during class time which
culminates in a performance conference on November 17, 2011. The project has already raised funding
from the Maine Arts Commission, Maine Community Foundation, The Robbins de -Beaumont Foundation
and Jane B. Cook Charitable Trust.
In its review of the application, the Commission noted that the program is unique in nature and will
allow students with no experience with the arts to deepen their understanding, foster an appreciation of
the arts, and increase mutual respect and trust among students. The grant application was complete,
well organized on program approach, outreach and collaboration and met funding criteria. The
Commission unanimously recommends full funding of the request.
(NOTE: The Commission on Cultural Development received a $10,000 appropriation for FY 2012 and has a
carryover balance of $18,950 from FY 2011. The Commission will have $26,950 remaining available, if this grant is
approved.)
