Date: February 22, 2016
Item/Subject: ORDER, Dedicating and Renaming the Airport's Domestic Terminal in Honor
of former Airport Director Peter R. D'Errico.
Responsible Department: City Council
Commentary: This Order will dedicate the domestic terminal in honor of former Airport
Director Peter R. D'Errico and rename the domestic terminal the 'Peter R. D'Errico Passenger
Terminal.'
Mr. D'Errico served the City of Bangor and the Bangor International Airport (BGR) in a variety of
key roles and capacities during his 30+ year career including the Economic Development
Director, Airport Director, Advisor, and City Councilor.
Peter began his career with the City as the Director of Economic Development from 1959-1969.
Peter retired and went on to be elected to the Bangor City Council in 1969 where he served the
City until 1970. The transitioning of Dow Air Force Base, however, brought Peter out of
retirement and Peter stepped in to lead the Airport and serve as the Dow Reuse Coordinator.
Peter then served as the Airport Director from 1970-1990 making him the longest serving
Director at BGR.
As the Airport Director, he played a vital role in implementing the Dow Air Force Base Re -Use
plan which was crucial to the conversion of the base to a civilian, commercial use airport, and
building the airport as a renowned diversion point for trans-Atlantic flights. In addition, Mr.
D'Errico oversaw countless, significant infrastructure improvements at BGR, which included the
construction of the domestic and international terminals. Additionally, Mr. D'Errico helped
create a cargo facility that shipped everything from lobsters to horses. Under his stewardship
he brought in 51 companies to the airport and a combined 2,000 public and private sector jobs.
Mr. D'Errico went on to serve two more terms on the Bangor City Council from 2003 through
2009. Prior to serving the City of Bangor, Peter served in the Maine Air National Guard holding
the rank of Major.
Peter R. D'Errico is held in the highest regard as a result of his service and accomplishments in
the military, field of aviation and his dedication to the citizens of Bangor as well as past and
present employees of the Bangor International Airport. For those reasons, the Airport
Committee unanimously recommends the Council approve renaming the domestic terminal the
Peter R. D'Errico Passenger Terminal.
