Item No. 39 '155
Date: May 11, 2009
Item/Subject: Ordinance, Amending the Code of the City of Bangor, Chapter 278, Taxicabs,
§ 278-1, Definitions, to Allow Taxicabs with a Capacity of Nine People.
Responsible Department: Clerk
Commentary:
This ordinance amendment would allow taxicabs with seating capacity for as many as nine
people, including the driver, to be licensed in the City of Bangor. The City currently allows
taxicabs with a capacity of no more than six people. It was thought that state law prohibited
taxicabs with a greater capacity, but more recent information, confirmed with the Department of
Motor Vehicles, has indicated that the State merely requires an additional fee and higher
insurance coverage for larger vehicles.
These changes were suggested at the Taxicab Advisory Committee meeting on April 17, 2009
and met with widespread approval there.
