Responsible Department: City Council Commentary: As an element of the State's School Consolidation legislation, the Fiscal Year 10 budget of the Bangor School Department must be submitted to the voters for validation subsequent to its approval by the School Committee and the City Council. A separate Council order setting June 9, 2009 as the date for that election appears elsewhere on tonight's agenda. In order to hold the election on June 9"', the City Council must take formal action to approve the budget within fourteen days prior to the election. The attached Resolve indicates that the Council will take a formal vote on that budget at the Council Meeting of May 27, 2009. In order to avoid any last minute disagreements at the time the Council takes the formal vote on the School budget, staff recommended that a vote be taken on a resolve indicating the intent of the Council to approve the school budget early enough in the budget process to allow time, if necessary, to address and resolve any issues or disagreements. This proposal was accepted by those Councilors present at a recent budget meeting. The attached resolve will also, therefore, indicate the intention of the Council, barring unforeseen circumstances, to approve the School Department budget as adopted and recommended by the Bangor School Committee.
