Item No. 39 157
Date: May 11, 2009
Item/Subject: Ordinance, Amending Code of the City of Bangor — Chapter 228, Public Morals,
- Designating Safe Zones within the City of Bangor
Responsible Department: Legal
Commentary:
The Maine Legislature has authorized municipalities to designate areas within a municipality that
are frequented by minors as safe zones under 17-A M.R.S.A. §1101 (23). Any areas so
designated are required to be conspicuously marked with an informational sign using wording
provided by the Commissioner of Public Safety. There are numerous public parks and other
areas within the City of Bangor frequented by minors.
This Ordinance will designate certain areas as Safe Zones and require the Bangor Police
Department to post the required signage.
This was reviewed by the Government Operations Committee which recommended approval.
