Item/Subject: ORDER, Approving Grant Request from Bangor Public Library for $500 to Fund a
Year of Free Daily Passes to the Maine Discovery Museum
Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development
Commentary:
The City Council has assigned the Commission on Cultural Development the responsibility of reviewing
grant applications to the City from arts and cultural organizations and recommending a course of action
to the City Council for its review and consideration
The Bangor Public Library submitted an application for $500 to continue funding a year of free daily
passes to the Maine Discovery Museum for Bangor Public Library members in good standing. Each pass
would allow free admission for up to four people, at least one of whom must be a child and at least one
of whom must be a library card holder. The museum pass program reaches a group of children whose
families may not be able to afford Museum tickets and families who have demonstrated an interest in the
arts and humanities by using the Library.
This grant application is a result of the Library's involvement with the Downtown Arts Collaborative that
includes the Maine Discovery Museum as well as the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Bangor Museum
and Center for History, the American Folk Festival, the Penobscot Theatre, River City Cinema, the
Robinson Ballet Company, and the University of Maine Museum of Art. This direct approach has proven
successful for both entities in the past. The library makes an effort to promote this opportunity to
families who may not be able to afford museum tickets.
Of the funds appropriated by the City Council, $13,450 remains available. The Commission for Cultural
Development recommends that the City Council approve a grant of $500.
