Item No.
9 063
Date: 1-26-09
Item/Subject: Resolve, Appropriating $184,500 in Assistance to Firefighters Grant Funding
and $20,500 in Local Match from the Fire Equipment Reserve to Purchase a
Replacement for Tanker 6
Responsible Department: Fire
Commentary:
The City has received notification that a grant application to fund the replacement of the Fire
Department's tanker has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The
total cost of a replacement unit is estimated to be $205,000, with $184,500 in grant funding and
a required 10% local match in the amount of $20,500. As you may recall, the unit the Fire
Department is looking to replace is of significant concern. Our current tanker 6 is a 2,000 gallon
water tank mounted on a 1987 Ford chassis. The tank was originally taken from a 1972
Chevrolet. As was common practice in the fire service, this particular piece of equipment was
built in-house and does not comply with National Fire Protection Association standards.
This equipment is housed at Station 6 (Griffin Rd) and provides a source of water for the more
rural parts of our community that do not have hydrants.
The attached resolve will appropriate $205,000 to replace this equipment. The local share of the
funding will be transferred from the City's Fire Equipment Reserve, which has adequate funding
available.
