Item No. i 11, , '17
Date: June 28, 2010
Item/Subject: ORDER, Authorizing the Fire Chief to Apply for an Assistance to Firefighters
Grant to Install Water Storage Tanks in Areas Without Fire Hydrants
Responsible Department: Fire
Commentary:
The Fire Departments of Orono, Veazie and Bangor all have areas in their communities that
share a boundary line and are outside of the fire hydrant system. Most of these areas do not
have a readily available water supply for fighting structure and wild land fires.
The three fire departments have put together a regional application to the Assistance to
Firefighters Grant Program for the installation of four 10,0000 gallon concrete tanks which would
provide a water supply in the outlying areas where no fire hydrants exist. We have identified
general areas for the tanks to be installed but do not currently have exact locations. These
concrete water storage tanks will be of great benefit to all three of the communities.
The estimated cost of the four water storage tanks is $92,800. We are asking for Council
approval to apply for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program as a region for the purpose of
installing water storage tanks in outlying areas where fire hydrants are not available.
The Town of Orono is the lead applicant on the regional grant request. If we are awarded this
regional grant, Bangor would be required to contribute a 10% match of $3,093.
The Government Operations Committee recommends approval.

Re: Regional application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program
The Fire Departments of Orono, Veazie and Bangor all have areas in their communities that
share a boundary line and are outside of the fire hydrant system. Most of these areas do not
have a water supply readily available for the purpose of fighting structure fires as well as wild
land fires. We recently met and are working together and have put together a regional
application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for the installation of 4 -10,0000
gallon concrete tanks which would provide a readily available water supply in the outlying areas
where a fire hydrant does not exist. We have identified the general areas for the tanks to be
installed but do not currently have the exact location. These concrete water storage tanks will
be of great benefit to all three of the communities. The estimated cost of the 4-10,000 gallon
concrete water storage tanks is $92,800. The Town of Orono is the lead applicant on the
regional grant request.
We are asking for Council approval to apply for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program as
a region for the purpose of installing 4-10,000 gallon water storage tanks in the outlying areas
where fire hydrants are not available.
If we are successful and are awarded this regional grant the City of Bangor would be required to
contribute a 10% match of the total project which would be $3,093.
