Item No. t' .3 t
Date: June 28, 2010
Item/Subject: ORDER, Authorizing the Fire Chief to Apply for an Assistance to Firefighters
Grant to Install Sprinklers at Central Fire Station and Station 5
Responsible Department: Fire
Commentary:
The only Fire Station in the City of Bangor that is completely sprinklered and meets current NFPA
13 code requirements is Station 6 on the Griffin Road, which is less then a year old. Central Fire
Station located on Main Street which was constructed in 1977 does not have any sprinklers.
Station 5 located which was constructed in 1993 on the Hogan Road has a partial system. When
Central Fire Station and Station 5 were constructed they both met the requirements at that time.
In an effort to bring all of the Fire Stations into compliance and meet current NFPA 13
requirements we are asking for the Council to authorize the Fire Department to apply for an
Assistance to Firefighters Grant to bring both Fire Stations into current NFPA 13 code
requirements.
The estimates for these two projects is:
Central $69,054
Station 5 $58,762
Totaling $127,836
As some of you may recall if we are successful and are awarded this grant the City of Bangor
would be required to contribute a 10% match which would be $12, 836.
We are asking for Council approval to apply for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for
the purpose of installing NFPA 13 code compliant sprinkler systems for Central Fire Station and
Station 5.
Approval of this application is recommended by the Government Operations Committee.
