Honor Monument in Norumbega Mall

Commentary: This Resolve is presented at the request of Councilor Wheeler. It will approve
the placement of a World War II Roll of Honor Monument in Norumbega Mall including the
names of Bangor citizens who served in the Armed Services during that War. This will fulfill the
intent of action taken by the Bangor City Council in October 1944. The Resolve also indicates
the Council's support and approval of activities of private citizens to assist in fulfilling the intent
of the original Council Order.

(TITLE.) Resolve, Approving the Placement of a World War II Roll of Honor
Monument in Norumbega Mall
BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR:
BE IT RESOLVED,
WHEREAS, the Bangor City Council, on October 9, 1944, did adopt the following order:
WHEREAS, many citizens, both men and women of the City of Bangor are now engaged in the
Armed Services, and it appears that it is suitable and proper that the city take
recognition of such by preparing and displaying of a suitable Roll of Honor, it is
now therefore ORDERED that the City Manager be and is instructed to cause to be
prepared and displayed a suitable Roll of Honor containing the names of all men
and women of our City who are now in the Armed Services, and the expense
thereof to be charged to the proper account;" and
WHEREAS. the aforementioned Council Order was never fulfilled, and no Scroll of Honor was
ever prepared and displayed; and
WHEREAS. a group of private citizens now desire to undertake the funding for and placement
of a suitable monument containing the names of Bangor citizens who served in
the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II in Norumbega Mall and
that such monument's design and placement shall be approved by the Parks and
Recreation Department of the City of Bangor, which shall also assume the ongoing
care and maintenance of aforesaid monument; and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, THAT the Bangor City Council does approve and support the
activities of private citizens to fulfill the intent of the Bangor City Council's Order, passed on
October 9, 1944, and also approve the placement of said monument in Norumbega Mall,
provided that no appropriation of City funds be made without an additional Order by the City
Council authorizing such appropriation.
