Source Pollution Grant Funds for Projects within Capehart and Penjajawoc
Streams
Responsible Department: Finance
Commentary:
The attached order would authorize the City to apply for and accept up to $240,000 in Federal
Section 319 grant funds passed through the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for
projects within Capehart and Penjajawoc streams.
The Capehart Neighborhood Rain Water Capture project application is for $90,000. The primary
goal of this project is to reduce and/or slow the volume of water making its way to the stream,
and the secondary goal is to filter out pollutants that may be carried away with the rain water in
this watershed.
The Penjajawoc Stream project application is for $150,000. Funds would be used to replace an
existing crumbling 104 foot long, 13 foot diameter culvert located on the Sylvan Road and
relocate the existing 12 inch water main. This project will work to restore the stream channel to
a natural condition, and increase its capacity to support aquatic life.
These grant funds do require a local match. The majority of the match will be provided by in-
kind labor provided by the City's environmental coordinator, engineering, planning, and code
enforcement offices as well as Bangor Housing Authority and Bangor Water Distr' .
