Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing the Interim City Manager to Apply for a Grant to Fund a Host Site
for the Two -Year US Center for Disease Control's Public Health Apprentice Program

Commentary: This apprentice/intern will work with the Health Promotion and Immunization program
at Health and Community Services.
In Year One the Public Health Apprentice will work to support the chronic disease prevention work that
the Health Promotion Program in engaged in per its charge as a Healthy Maine Partnership by:
• Developing a system for dissemination of health promotion and chronic disease print, video, and
radio materials used in our broad-based public health education campaign.
• Supporting the National Association of County and City Health Organization's Mobilizing for Action
through Planning and Partnerships process that is currently underway.
In Year Two the Apprentice will provide support to the Immunization and Travel Medicine Program by:
• Researching electronic medical records systems options including electronic connectivity
requirements, potential tie in with Health InfoNet, and provide input on rolling our paper-based
system into an electronic format.
• Researching options for diversifying the program's funding base, increasing fee for service
activities within the program,
• Researching potential community partnerships, and exploring opportunities for increasing
awareness of the program and the public health benefits of immunizations.
The City will provide a workspace and supervision; all employment related costs will be funded by the
Grant.
