Re: MDEA (Maine Drug Enforcement Agency) lease
At the Government Operations Committee meeting on October 20, 2009 1 discussed with the
Committee several options in regards to the future use of Old Station 6 located at 14 Griffin
Road. They were: retaining the building and land for City use; demolishing the building and
retaining the land for City use; leasing the property (with or without the building), or selling the
property (with or without the building). At that meeting I informed members that earlier that
day I was approached by a member of MDEA in regards to leasing a portion of the building and
allowing the City to utilize the remaining available space. As discussed Fire, Police and Public
Works currently are storing either equipment or materials at this station. As a result of MDEA
showing an interest in leasing a portion of the building and their willingness to allow City use of
the remaining space, the Committee decided to allow staff to negotiate with MDEA and return
to the Committee once we had reached an agreement.
MDEA would like to lease 1,800 square feet at a cost of $1,100.00/month for 3 years. Currently
they would like to lease the apparatus bay area only. This lease would allow for the continued
use of the building by the City.
The total yearly expenses for Old Station 6 are $3,500.00. This includes heat, electricity, water
and sewer.
Staff recommends we execute an agreement with MDEA that allows them to utilize 1,800
square feet of the apparatus area and allows continued use of the building by Fire, Police and
Public Works for the continued storage of equipment and other materials.
