Gastia, Chief of Police DATE: April 8, 2010 RE: Bureau of Highway Safety Grants The State of Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has grant funds available to assist local and state law enforcement agencies with their seatbelt enforcement, speed enforcement, and OUI enforcement efforts. The seatbelt enforcement grant calls for stepped up enforcement of seatbelt violations, typically for a two week period in May, and the speed enforcement and OUI enforcement grants allow for increased enforcement efforts during the summer months. The purpose of the grants is to generate as many stops as possible for seatbelt, speed, inspection, red light, OUI, etc., violations. Unlike prior years, the three purpose areas have been combined into one grant application. The Police Department would like to apply for up to $10,000 to provide overtime reimbursement as a means to increase enforcement efforts related to the three purpose areas. Although we may not apply for the full allowable amount under the grant, I request authorization to apply for up to the maximum amount. Actual amounts for which we apply will be determined as we complete the application process. The deadline for application is April 16, 2010.
