Item No. E `! r
Date: 2/22/2010
Item/Subject: Resolve, Appropriating $83,000 in Maine Department of
Transportation Grant Funds to Construct Phase I Sidewalks in the Vicinity of
Downeast School
Responsible Department: Public Services
Commentary:
During the FY 2010 budget process, staff reviewed a pending grant opportunity geared toward
improving pedestrian safety. The City has received notification that its sidewalk grant
application submitted to the Maine Department of Transportation has been granted. This
particular grant is awarded under the Safe Routes to School Funding, which provides 100%
grant funding for qualifying projects. In general, the Phase I work will consist of the
construction of sidewalks within the block surrounding Downeast School (Dirigo, Moosehead and
Fort Knox). This project will begin to address long overdue improvements to the walking route
used by school children in the Downeast School area.
