HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-11-09 10-004 ORDERCOUNCIL ACTION Item Na 10 004- Item/Subject: 04 Date: November 9, 2009 Item/Subject: ORDER, Accepting Proposed Memorial Plaque for Willard Carleton Orr Responsible Department: Community and Economic Development Commentary: The City Council has designated the Commission on Cultural Development to review public art and monument proposals in accordance with the Public Art and Monuments Policy and make a recommendation on accepting and locating them to the Bangor City Council, which has the sole authority to adopt, reject, or revise any such recommendation. Bangor residents requested a Plaque be mounted on the Pedestrian Walkway in the Kenduskeag Plaza for Willard Carleton Orr who was a Bangor citizen and the only Maine resident to be killed during Japan's attack on U.S. military facilities in the Hawaiian Islands on December 7, 1941. The Commission for Cultural Development is recommending that the City Council approve and accept this memorial to Willard Carleton Orr and recommend that, if possible, this be funded (at least in part) by an outside Veterans organization or Orr family members. ORDER, Accepting Proposed Memorial Plaque for Willard Carleton Orr WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development's mission is to promote the development of Bangor as a regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and cultural expression of its diverse peoples; and WHEREAS,, the Commission is authorized to review proposals in accordance with the Public Art and Monuments Policy, adopted by Coucil Order 04-153 as amended, and to recommend acceptance and location of proposed art and monuments to the Bangor City Council; and WHEREAS,, the Bangor City Council has the sole authority to adopt, reject or revise any such recommendation; and WHEREAS,, Bangor residents requested a Plaque be mounted on the Pedestrian Walkway in the Kenduskeag Plaza for Willard Carleton Orr who was a Bangor citizen and the only Maine resident to be killed during Japan's attack on U. S. military facilities in the Hawaiian Islands on December 7, 1941; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development has reviewed this proposal and recommends City Council acceptance and approval of a Memorial Plaque to Willard Carleton Orr and further recommend that, if possible, this be funded (at least in part) by an outside Veterans organization or Orr family members; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT The proposal for a Memorial Plaque for Willard Carleton Orr to be placed on the Pedestrian Walkway in the Kenduskeag Plaza is hereby approved and accepted.
