The City has been "piggybacking" with the City of Brewer's bidding for the last two years. Through this process we are obtaining excellent pricing (FY 12, the City paid $64.33 per ton under the State of Maine bid, for FY 13 the City paid $58.77 per ton under the City of Brewer bid and the proposed price for FY 14 is $52.41 ton). The bids received by the City of Brewer included a lower bid from Mid Atlantic Salt Company at the rate of $51.00 ton. The only supply that is available to us for inspection is sitting under a tarp at Dysart's. This is not a product we would accept. Mid Atlantic indicated they would be receiving more, but we have never done business with them, nor were we able to inspect other product. Salt (sodium chloride) is an integral part of our winter operations, with the slight price difference, it was the recommendation of staff, both in Bangor and Brewer, to award the contract to International Salt Company. On August 19 2013, the Finance Committee reviewed and approved staff recommendation to award the contract to International Salt Company at $52.41 per ton. The contract award recommendation must be reviewed approved by the.City Council as it is over $100,000.
